On July 1st 2020 Universities Caribbean in partnership with UWItv, hosted a virtual forum One Caribbean Solutions: Post Crisis Strategic Partnership and Next Steps for Reopening Universities. The event sought to emphasize the importance of new strategic partnerships and collaborative plans of action for a sustainable university sector.
During the event, Universities Caribbean and Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF) made their partnership official by signing an Agreement for the quality improvement of the Caribbean university sector and for better coordinated responses to the issues that are specific to the region. Created 60 years ago and present in 118 countries, the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie is one of the largest international agencies of Higher Education and research institutions. AUF promotes cultural and linguistic diversity and acts as a global Francophone Higher Education entity engaging in the economic, social and cultural development of communities.
Executives of Universities Caribbean and AUF have identified common areas of action to foster and promote Caribbean development and integration through joint initiatives, funding strategies, and innovative approaches relating to the wider Caribbean, for the benefit of its peoples and across the diverse cultural and linguistic groups that typify Caribbean societies.
Professor Saulo Neiva – Director for the Caribbean Region, Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF) spoke about training projects on issues relevant for regional development, such as; the blue economy, climate change impacts in the Caribbean, distance learning, and MOOCS among others. “This alliance signed today will bring positive results. Work has already begun that will benefit the universities in the network “.
The virtual forum also included UNESCO-IESALC’S recommendations for the reopening of Universties. Before presenting the recommendations for the reopening of universities, the UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (IESALC) Director, Dr. Francesc Pedró, celebrated the signed agreement, underlining its relevancy for the positive impact on the region.
